Patients can receive medications and nutritional supplements to increase hemoglobin production. Hemoglobin helps the body handle blood loss by temporarily diluting blood with fluid, lessening blood loss when incisions are made.
There are also several techniques used during surgery to reduce blood loss, including reducing blood flow with anesthesia, cleaning lost blood and returning it to the patient after the operation, and clotting the blood near the incision area.
